He then studied Jazz under the mentorship of Theloneous Monk's saxophonist Paul Jeffrey and studied in the Black Music ensemble under Prof. Richard Davis. After a visit to Madison by one of the leading world exponents of the Afro-Peruvian cajon\, Juan Medrano Cotito\, he went on to study and play extensively with him and also studied with the legendary Afro-Peruvian guitarist/bassist/composer\, the late Maestro Carlos Hayre. Having played nationally and internationally Richard believes in creating spaces with music and art where cultures can understand each other perfectly as one community.
